Rhodes University, eKhaya ICT and the University of Fort Hare have jointly initiated the ESTIMA project. One of the core deliverables of the project is a software development house (software factory) situated in Grahamstown and dedicated to software development in the field of Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICTD / ICT4D), using open source and agile programming methods. The premises of the software factory will be located either on or near the Rhodes University campus, to allow close collaboration with researchers.
The software factory is part of a much larger effort to bring digital services to rural areas in a sustainable manner which is being piloted in the Siyakhula Living Lab. The Siyakhula Living Lab is part of the European Network of Living Labs, it has been running for 3 years and hosts a number of participants from industry, research, government and the non-profit sector.
Do you match our needs?
We need two excellent programmers with a proven programming track record. You should be familiar with agile programming methods and thus be able to work in a disciplined manner in a team towards goals that you help to set yourself. You should be socially minded and have an emotional link to the enterprise and its goals. You must be able to work on location in Grahamstown.
One of the positions is for a lead programmer, who will have a lot of room to design framework architectures and will be able to influence technical decisions concerning technology and development environment (if joining the process early enough).
Technologies we are going to be using: Java (JMX, JAIN, J2ME, etc.), Spring, Hibernate, Apache-*, Maven, Ant, Eclipse, Javascript, GWT, etc.
You should have:
- A BSc. Hons. in Computer Science, Mathematics or Physics, or better.
- At least two years of full-time programming experience in a relevant technology.
- Good knowledge of English.
